Serdar and his journey to becoming a home barista
A journey from curiosity to passion.
Serdar, an engineering student at university, is also a professional athlete. In his spare time, he is interested in gastronomy, mainly coffee.Introduction to Coffee
"I can say my coffee journey began in 2015 with a traditional cappuccino I drank in Italy. Before that, I used to drink Turkish coffee, but since I had been exercising for a long time, I didn't prefer creamy/fatty or sugary (Frappe style) drinks. For this reason, 2nd wave coffee shops didn't interest me.
The cappuccino I drank in Italy was made with a shot of espresso from robusta beans and fatty milk, in smaller portions. I liked the mouthfeel and the taste."
Beyond Curiosity
"In 2016, The Sudd opened in Antalya, and I used to go there in my free time after school. Because it was far from my home and my interest in coffee was growing, I bought an espresso machine for home.
As I visited specialty coffee shops, filter coffee became part of my routine. Then came Aeropress, and various dripper types. With daily calibrations, grinder adjustments, and experiments, at some point, things got out of hand, and I decided to slow down. Coffee continued to be a big part of my life; I still try and brew. When I go abroad, I also buy beans from roasters there."
Antalya's Developing Sector
"When there were few specialty coffee shops in Antalya, enthusiastic people worked in this business and developed themselves. Now that it has become commercial, I encounter rote brewing and misinformation. For this reason, I find brewing or pulling shots at home more enjoyable."
About Incommon
"I've known Incommon since its establishment. The filter beans are a bit too light for me, but I like the espresso beans. It would be something I'd prefer more if it moved towards omni roast. And I think more beans like Damo should be available."
