About the Farm

In 2006, brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo established a coffee growing and exporting company in Ethiopia's Sidamo region. Daye Bensa exports Ethiopian coffee beans from its farm in Shantawene Village, and also from smallholder farmers in the nearby villages of Karamo and Bombe. Our Shantawene Ethiopian coffee beans are named after the village where the majority of the people work.

Daye Bensa extends from 1,900 to 2,217 meters, with small farmsteads located further up the mountain, between 2,000 and 2,400 meters. Daye Bensa uniquely has 15 washing stations in three regions and manages all the coffees they export. Their two farms are certified organic, UTZ, Rainforest Alliance, and CAFE Practices, which is an incredible achievement.

We are always fond of Ethiopia! Shantawene, hailing from the birthplace of coffee, enchants our palate with its sweetness and aromas. The tropical fruit notes that emerge as it cools and its low acidity provide a smooth transition between coffee layers. An excellent choice for a clean and balanced cup of coffee!

Gafisse station is known for its success in processing coffees sourced from farmers in Shantawene Village, which has 940 members. Every harvest season, it provides employment opportunities for 142 people in the region. Gafisse gained recognition by securing 7th place in the 2020 Cup of Excellence Ethiopia Coffee Competition with the processing of a coffee cherry produced at Gatta Farm.

The Sidama region is particularly known for its unique flavor profile. It primarily stands out with a fruity, acidic, and sweet aroma. This type of coffee is characterized by floral and citrus notes, sometimes with hints of chocolate or tropical fruits. This allows the coffee beans to have diverse flavor profiles depending on Sidama's different microclimates.

Gatta Farm was a natural forest before it was discovered by co-founder Mulugeta Dukamo while he was managing the construction of Gafisse Station. They first planted coffee in 2013 and established the drying station in 2017. The vegetation and forest surrounding the farm are beneficial as natural shade for the farm and drying station. Planting, harvesting, and processing work is mostly carried out by local residents. Women are also included and are mostly assigned to quality control and processing, apart from labor-intensive tasks. By offering work opportunities and fair wages, this is a real benefit for the local residents.
